Star Trek Concordance, Signed!

These are some of my favorite fan publications from the early days of Star Trek because they’re signed!

I call Bjo Trimble the OG Star Trek uber-fan. She’s probably best known for the coordinating the mail in campaign to save Star Trek after it wasn’t renewed for a third season and for editing the Star Trek Concordance. Actually there were three different self-published Concordance volumes: The original Star Trek Concordance in 1969, the original edition with episode summaries and a glossary for the first and second seasons; The 3rd Season Supplement to the Star Trek Concordance in 1973, covering the third season just as it says; and the Star Trek Concordance Color Book 1 in 1973, a collection of artwork from the other volumes. The fourth volume, a trade paperback, was published in 1976 by Ballantine Books. It covered the original series and the animated series. I’ll write about it in a different post.

I have two copies of the original Concordance. One is signed by Bjo Trimble and the other is signed by Matt Jefferies, original set designer for Star Trek and designed of the USS Enterprise. My copies of the third season supplement and the color book are also both signed by Bjo Trimble.

I have to trust that the signatures are authentic since I have no information about their provenance. I think they are true autographs even though Bjo Trimble admitted to faking autographs on photos ordered by fans from Gene Roddenberry’s mail order business Lincoln Enterprises. Quoted in These Are the Voyages – TOS: Season Three by Marc Cushman, with Susan Osborn (page 321), Trimble said:

“…some were asking for photos, so we’d send autographed pictures out — and, yes, I’d sign them. I learned to be pretty good at forging signatures.”

Below are the signed covers with sample pages from each of the magazines.
